FAQ

What you usually ask, no runaround.

From what brand strategy is to how we work together. And if there's a question that isn't here, write to me or book a free intro: we'll sort it out in 30 minutes.

What is a brand strategy?

Brand strategy is the link that aligns the whole organization behind a purpose. It's the system of decisions that brings clarity and order: it precisely defines who you're talking to, how you do it, what makes you unique and what place you want to hold in the market. It's not the logo or a document to file away —it's what ties together business management, brand and communication, so everyone rows in the same direction and makes better decisions.

How is it different from branding, marketing and visual identity?

They're different layers. Strategy is the “why” and the “what”: purpose, positioning, value proposition and narrative. Branding or visual identity is the “how it looks and feels”: name, logo, design. Marketing is the “how it's spread”: campaigns and channels. Strategy comes first: without it, branding and marketing are intuition without direction.

What does a brand strategist do?

They help companies build a solid, differentiated brand from the ground up: defining purpose, audience, positioning, narrative and guidelines, and translating them into tools for decision-making. They don't do the operational execution (design, content), but the strategic lens that orders and directs everything else.

What does a brand strategy include?

It depends on the project and the challenge; I don't work with a fixed formula. It can include diagnosis, purpose, positioning, value proposition, differentiation, audience, personality, narrative and tone of voice. Every strategy is built to measure.

What is brand positioning?

It's the place a brand holds in its audience's mind and the reason they choose it over the competition. Defining it means understanding the category, the competitors and what the audience truly values, to build a clear, relevant and lasting perception.

What is a brand audit?

It's a strategic diagnosis of a brand's current state: what's working, what isn't and where the opportunities are before deciding what to change. Depending on the project it can cover identity, communication, positioning, competition, architecture and brand perception. It's the ideal step before a rebrand.

What is brand architecture?

It's the system that defines how a company's brands, sub-brands, products and services relate to each other. It helps decide what should carry the company name, when it's worth creating a new brand and what relationship should exist between the different offerings.

What is a Fractional CBO (Chief Brand Officer)?

It's a brand director who joins your team part-time and actively manages the brand, without the cost of a full-time hire. They keep things consistent, support decisions and hold the strategic course day to day. Ideal for companies that need a senior brand lead but not a full-time role.

Do I need a brand strategy if I already have a logo and visual identity?

Having a logo and visual identity doesn't mean having a strategy. Plenty of companies look good, but aren't clear on what makes them different, who they want to attract or why they should be chosen. Often the problem isn't how the brand looks, but the lack of clarity behind it.

Does my brand need a strategy or a rebrand?

It depends on the problem. If your brand looks good but can't differentiate, communicate clearly or grow, it's almost always strategic, not aesthetic. A rebrand with no strategy behind it usually fixes the wrong color. The healthiest move is to start with an audit that shows what you really need.

When should I work on my brand strategy?

Especially when you're starting out, growing, changing your audience or offering, entering new markets, adding products or services, or when the brand no longer represents where the business is heading. It's also the ideal step before a rebrand.

When do I need to work on brand architecture?

Mainly when you have several brands, business units, products or services that need to relate to each other. Also when you're growing, creating new lines or when your portfolio starts getting hard to understand.

Who is Matías Marinaro?

He's an “impact-first” brand strategist with over 11 years of experience, specialized in helping purpose-driven brands grow and differentiate. He co-created brands in the United States, Europe and Latin America, and today provides strategy, positioning, audit, architecture and brand management (including Fractional CBO) to clients in over 12 countries. What kind of companies does he work with?

Mainly people and organizations that, beyond economic results, want to do things right and create positive impact through what they do. You don't need an explicit social cause: the common thread is a purpose that goes beyond just making money.

How do I know if Matías Marinaro is the right consultant for my brand?

If you're only looking to execute communication pieces or make your brand “look better,” it's probably not the right approach. If you need clarity, differentiation and a strategic direction to turn what your organization does into a brand that leaves a mark, we might be a good fit. We can check in a first 30-minute call, free and with no commitment.

Do you also do the design and execution?

No, I don't handle the operational side (design, content, etc.) because my focus is strategy. When needed, I work with a team of collaborators (designers, developers, analysts) or coordinate with your existing team to bring the strategy to execution.

How much does developing a brand strategy cost?

It's built to measure, so the value depends on the scope and complexity of the project. As a reference, brand strategy projects usually range between USD 1,000 and USD 5,000. Before sending a proposal I need to understand the challenge and what your organization truly needs —we cover that in the free intro.

How long does it take to develop a brand strategy?

A full brand strategy usually takes between 1 and 3 months. The exact time depends on the complexity, the depth of the diagnosis, the research involved and the number of people participating. Other services are solved in less time or extend through ongoing support.

Do you work in person or remotely? With clients in other countries?

Both: at your company (ideally), at my studio or virtually. I work with clients in different countries and serve in Spanish and English, so distance is not a limitation.

How do we start if I'm not sure which service I need?

You don't need to have it figured out. You book a free 30-minute intro; there we look at your project, identify the challenge and see what kind of work makes sense. If we're a good fit, I share a proposal with next steps and an action plan. No commitment.
